Overview
Mustang was opened to foreigners only in 1992 and a visitor requires a special permit to enter this Forbidden Kingdom. Trekking in Mustang takes you to the wind-swept valleys and arid landscape with its age-old Buddhist culture which is reminiscent of that in Tibet.
Mustang is one of those few places on earth where the ancient Buddhist culture has survived due to loss of its connection from the outside world for so long. The walled city of Lomanthang, dilapidated fortresses, old monasteries, stupas, ancient caves and rugged landscape chiseled by wind erosion will surely blow your mind when you visit Upper Mustang.
While the upper valley is dry and rugged, the lower Mustang is lush with green forests and farmland. Due to its location in the rain shadow, Upper Mustang Trek is possible to do during monsoon which is the best time for some of their biggest festivals. Upper Mustang Trek is a very unique trip that will take you to the land lost in time.
Typical Day with Mystic Himalaya Trekking
Our trekking day commences with a morning delivery of tea, coffee, or hot chocolate to your room by your assistant guide. This is followed by a warm washing water bowl brought to your room. Then you will have a time to organize, packing essential items for the day into your day pack, including sunglasses, sunscreen, sun hat, mobile phone, camera, cash, passport, rain jacket, rain pant, day pack cover, fleece jacket, water bottle, and optional snacks. Once organized, leave your duffel bag outside your room for collection by our staff. We will give you an hour to prepare your duffel bag, and breakfast will be served in the main dining hall.
Our breakfast begins with hot porridge with milk and honey, accompanied by tea or coffee. This is followed by your choice of eggs with bread, butter, and jam. While you enjoy your breakfast, our porters head to the next campsite, aiming to reach it before the group. After breakfast, we recommend some stretching before hitting the trail. Ensure you haven't left anything in the lodge by thoroughly checking your room before departure, although our staff also conducts a final check. Our lead assistant guide will call "Zoom Zoom" in Nepali, meaning 'Let’s Go,' and we embark on a scenic stroll under the care of our reliable staff.
After approximately 4 hours of walking, we pause for lunch amidst nature's beauty, offering breathtaking mountain views. After lunch, we trek for 2 to 3 hours, before checking into our lodge to rest. At 4 pm, tea is served with biscuits. A bowl of warm washing water is also provided in the afternoon, either before or after tea. Spend time with the group or our staff, listening to their stories. Dinner is served at 6:30 pm, beginning with a hot bowl of soup with snacks, followed by the main course and dessert. Hot drinks are offered five times a day to ensure you stay adequately hydrated. After dinner, our staff provides hot water bags to keep you warm during the night and refills your water bottle. This concludes our day.
Detail Itinerary
Upon arriving in Kathmandu, your trip leader or office representative will greet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. The rest of the afternoon is free for you to relax. In the early evening, your duffel bag, sleeping bag, inner liner, and down jacket will be distributed, followed by a trek briefing. At 7 pm, there's a welcome dinner at a traditional Nepali restaurant-an excellent chance to bond with your fellow group members before the trip begins. Enjoy your overnight stay in Kathmandu at Hotel Yak and Yeti. (Dinner included)
Today, we'll explore the cultural treasures of the Kathmandu Valley, starting with a visit to Kathmandu Durbar Square, also known as Basantapur Durbar and Hanuman Dhoka. This ancient square, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, showcases buildings dating back to the 4th to 8th centuries, later expanded by the Malla rulers in the 17th century. The square is a living museum where past cultural practices are still observed, and you can visit the house of the living Goddess Kumari. Next, we'll visit Boudhanath Stupa, the largest stupa in Nepal and a significant Buddhist site. Located 8 kilometers from the city center, this massive mandala-based structure houses relics of Kassapa Buddha and is a vibrant center for Buddhist rituals and circumambulations, particularly in the mornings and evenings. After the tour, we will return back to our hotel.
Enjoy your overnight stay in Hotel Yak and Yeti. (Breakfast included)
Your journey begins with a short yet breathtaking 25-minute flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, offering stunning aerial views of the Himalayan peaks, lush valleys, and winding rivers. As the plane soars above the diverse terrain, you may catch glimpses of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges on a clear day.
Upon arrival in Pokhara, Nepal's adventure capital, you'll be welcomed by the serene beauty of Phewa Lake, lush green hills, and a relaxed atmosphere. Spend the rest of the day exploring the lakeside, enjoying the vibrant cafes, or taking a boat ride with a view of the snow-capped Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) Peak reflecting on the tranquil waters. Overnight at Temple Tree Resort. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)
We begin our journey by following the major highway, driving through the scenic Syangja road. As we travel, the views of the mountains become increasingly spectacular, offering glimpses of the majestic peaks that dominate the skyline. Our route takes us along the banks of the Seti River, with the road gradually leaving the main highway and heading towards the Annapurna foothills. The landscape transforms into a tapestry of beautiful terraced rice fields, showcasing the agricultural beauty of the region.
The road winds its way through the hills, eventually bringing us to the small town of Beni. Here, the terrain changes as the road becomes bumpy and rough, adding a sense of adventure to the journey. We continue along the banks of the Kali Gandaki River, passing through charming villages and witnessing the natural beauty of the area, including several scenic waterfalls that cascade down the mountainsides.
Finally, we arrive at Neurikot, a peaceful village nestled in the mountains. Here, we will spend the night in a cozy mountain lodge, surrounded by the tranquility of the highlands. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)
In the morning, we set out on a hike to the sacred Guru Sangpo Cave, a site of great significance in the Buddhist community. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche, the revered spiritual leader, meditated in this cave, where he was blessed by the Dakinis (angels). Empowered by this spiritual encounter, he went on to rid Tibet of the demons that once plagued the region. Visiting the cave offers a profound connection to this ancient spiritual heritage.
After spending time at the cave, we descend back to the road and begin our drive through the picturesque villages of Marpha and Jomsom. The journey is filled with stunning views of the surrounding landscapes, with the road winding through the heart of the Kali Gandaki Valley. As we travel, you'll notice the distinct culture and architecture of the region, particularly in Marpha, which is renowned for its apple orchards.
Our drive concludes at Kagbeni, a historic village that serves as the gateway to Upper Mustang. Here, we settle in for the night at the Red House Lodge, surrounded by the stark beauty of the Mustang region. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)
Today marks the beginning of our journey into Upper Mustang, a region steeped in mystique and ancient culture. We start by presenting our special permit at the police checkpoint before continuing on the trail. The path leads us through a series of ascents and descents as we make our way to Tangbe, a charming village characterized by its narrow alleys and white washed houses, a testament to the region’s traditional architecture.
Continuing our trek, we descend towards Chuksang, another picturesque village where traditional whitewashed houses stand amidst scenic agricultural farmlands. Here, the landscape offers a beautiful contrast between the stark, barren hills and the lush, cultivated fields.
From Chuksang, the trail undulates along the banks of the Kali Gandaki River, with the rhythmic flow of the river providing a serene backdrop to our journey. The landscape is both rugged and awe-inspiring, with dramatic cliffs and rock formations rising on either side. As the day progresses, we arrive at the village of Chele, nestled in the mountains, where we’ll spend the night in a mountain lodge, surrounded by the tranquil beauty of Upper Mustang. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)
Our day begins with a steady ascent to the Chele La Pass at 3,630 meters, offering a rewarding start to our trek with sweeping views of the surrounding landscapes. After crossing the ridge from Chele, the trail leads us into a large side valley, where a long, gradual descent brings us to Samar, a significant resting spot historically used by horse caravans. Samar is known for its panoramic views of Mt. Nilgiri and the Annapurna range, creating a breathtaking backdrop as we pause to take in the scenery.
From Samar, the trail slopes downward to the Jhuwa Khola, a river that we cross before making a gradual ascent to the Bhena La Pass at 3,830 meters. The route continues downward into the village of Syangmochen, a serene stop nestled among the hills.
Our journey then takes us further upward to the Shyangmochen La Pass at 3,850 meters, where the trail opens into another vast valley. As we descend from the pass, we pass by a large, intricately painted chorten, a vivid reminder of the region’s deep spiritual heritage. Finally, we arrive at the picturesque village of Ghiling, where the stark beauty of the Mustang landscape meets the warmth of traditional Tibetan-style architecture. We spend the night in a mountain lodge, surrounded by the tranquility and rugged charm of Upper Mustang. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included).
Today's journey takes us through some of the most scenic and culturally rich landscapes of Upper Mustang. We begin by descending from Ghiling, passing through charming villages and expansive cultivated fields, making our way toward Ghami, one of the largest and most significant villages in the region.
After exploring Ghami, we descend further to cross the Ghami Khola, a river that cuts through the arid landscape, before ascending on the other side. The trail is lined with mani walls—sacred stone walls inscribed with Buddhist prayers—adding a spiritual element to the journey.
As we continue, the rugged beauty of the Mustang region unfolds, with the trail leading us through striking landscapes before reaching the village of Dhakmar. Known for its distinctive red cliffs, Dhakmar is a tranquil spot where we’ll rest and prepare for the challenging walk ahead. The night is spent in a mountain lodge, surrounded by the quiet beauty of the highlands.(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)
Today’s trek, though the longest of the journey, is a rewarding and relatively straight forward one. We start early, heading toward the Mui La Pass, which stands at an impressive 4,100meters. The ascent is steady, and the panoramic views from the pass make the effort worthwhile.
Our first major stop is the Ghar Gompa, the oldest monastery in the Mustang region, steeped in history and spiritual significance. This ancient site offers a fascinating glimpse into the deep-rooted Buddhist culture of the area.
After visiting Ghar Gompa, we continue our trek, crossing the Marang Pass before making our final approach to Lo Manthang. As we near the capital of the former Kingdom of Mustang, the landscape gradually transforms, with the stark, barren hills giving way to the walled city of Lo Manthang. This historic city, rich in culture and tradition, has been the heart of Mustang for centuries.
Upon arrival in Lo Manthang, we settle into a mountain lodge, reflecting on the day’s journey through one of the most captivating regions of Nepal. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)

Afterward, we explore the nearby village of Namgyal, where you can observe traditional lifestyles and interact with the locals, gaining a deeper understanding of the region's culture.
We return to Lo Manthang in the evening, where we’ll spend another night in a mountain lodge, soaking in the serene atmosphere of this historic city. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)
Today, we embark on an adventurous day trip that takes us to the remote and culturally significant areas around Lo Manthang.
Our journey begins with a drive towards the Kora-la Pass, situated at an altitude of 4,660 meters on the border between Nepal and Tibet. The pass offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and a glimpse into the landscape that connects these two ancient lands. Kora-la is not just a physical border but a historical and cultural gateway that has been used by traders for centuries.
Next, we visit the Lowo Nyiphuk Namdrol Norbuling cave sanctuary, a sacred site that holds deep spiritual significance for the local Buddhist community. This sanctuary is a place of meditation and pilgrimage, offering a serene and reflective environment amid the rugged terrain.
Our day continues with a visit to the Zhong Cave, a fascinating complex of ancient caves carved into the cliffs, where early settlers once lived. These caves are not only an archaeological wonder but also offer insight into the ancient way of life in this remote region.
After a full day of exploration, we return to Lo Manthang, where we spend the night at a mountain lodge, reflecting on the rich history and natural beauty we've experienced.(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)
After bidding farewell to the historic village of Lo Manthang, we begin our trek towards the stunningly remote Yara village. The journey takes us through a unique landscape, characterized by its reddish-brown hues and the stark, dramatic beauty of the glacier valley. This area, lying in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, presents a distinct and otherworldly terrain that contrasts sharply with the greener valleys below.
As we ascend to the small pass of Loday La, situated at 3,950 meters, we are rewarded with an incredible panoramic view of Lo Manthang spread out below, a last glimpse of this ancient city. The descent from the pass leads us to the village of Dhi, where we cross the mighty Kali Gandaki River, whose deep gorges and towering cliffs are a testament to the power of nature in this region.
Continuing our trek, we arrive at Yara village, a serene settlement surrounded by impressive cliffs and rock formations. The village is known for its tranquility and the warmth of its people, offering a peaceful retreat after the day's hike. We settle in for the night at a mountain lodge, where we'll enjoy a hearty meal and rest in preparation for the next day's adventures. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)
Today's trek takes us from Yara to the picturesque village of Tange, following a route that offers a blend of natural beauty and cultural encounters.
Leaving Yara, we begin our journey along a winding path that descends towards the Dhechaeng Khola, a river that carves through the rugged terrain. As we trek, we pass by small villages where locals are deeply engaged in their daily routines, offering us glimpses into the traditional lifestyles of the region.
The trail then ascends gradually as we approach the Sertang Pass, which stands at an impressive altitude of 3,975 meters. Reaching the pass, we are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of the Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri mountains. These towering peaks, often shrouded in mist, present a majestic backdrop, perfect for capturing unforgettable photos.
After taking in the stunning scenery, we begin our descent from the pass towards Tange village. As we descend, the landscape transitions into a serene valley where a gentle breeze greets us. Tange is a charming village with a sense of history and culture, and its peaceful ambiance is a welcome retreat after the day's trek.
We settle in for the night at a mountain lodge, reflecting on the day's adventures and the incredible beauty of the Mustang region. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)
Today's trek is one of the most challenging but equally rewarding, as we embark on a long journey from Tange to Tetang. The trail takes us through diverse landscapes, from arid terrains to verdant valleys, offering a true sense of adventure in the Mustang region.
Leaving Tange, we start the day with an ascent that quickly gets our hearts pumping. The path meanders through narrow ridges and along the sides of steep cliffs, requiring careful navigation. As we gain elevation, the views open up to reveal expansive vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys, a reminder of the rugged beauty of this remote area.
The trek continues with a series of ups and downs, testing our endurance as we make our way across the barren, windswept landscape. Despite the challenging nature of the hike, the stark beauty of the Mustang region—marked by its deep canyons, rocky outcrops, and distant snow-capped peaks—makes every step worthwhile.
After several hours of trekking, we descend into a more sheltered valley where Tetang is located. This village is nestled between two hills, providing a natural barrier against the strong winds that often sweep through the area. The village's traditional stone houses and the surrounding terraced fields offer a stark contrast to the barren landscapes we traversed earlier in the day.
Arriving in Tetang after this demanding trek, we are greeted with the warmth and hospitality of the local people. We settle in for the night at a mountain lodge, enjoying a well-deserved rest after a long day on the trail. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)
Today's trek is a journey through some of the most varied and striking landscapes in the Mustang region, as we make our way from Tetang to the sacred site of Muktinath. The path takes us through the cold, arid desert terrain typical of Upper Mustang, with stunning views that capture the rugged beauty of this remote area.
We begin our day with a challenging ascent, gradually climbing towards Gyu La Pass, the highest point on this route, standing at 4,677 meters above sea level. The trail is demanding, with steep sections that test our endurance, but the breathtaking vistas of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges provide constant motivation. The views from the pass are awe-inspiring, offering panoramic sights of the snow-capped peaks and the vast, open landscape stretching out below.
As we descend from Gyu La, the trail winds through the picturesque Jhong village, a charming settlement that feels like a step back in time. The traditional houses, ancient monasteries, and terraced fields create a serene atmosphere, providing a peaceful contrast to the starkness of the high-altitude desert.
The final stretch of our trek brings us to Muktinath, a site revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. The sacred temple and monasteries of Muktinath, nestled at 3,710 meters, are surrounded by a landscape of unparalleled beauty, making this destination a fitting end to a day filled with both physical challenge and spiritual reward.
After a long day on the trail, we rest in a mountain lodge, reflecting on the incredible journey through one of Nepal's most picturesque regions. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)
Today, we leave the sacred site of Muktinath and embark on a scenic drive to Tatopani, known for its natural hot springs. The journey is a dramatic descent from the high-altitude desert of Muktinath to the lush, verdant landscapes of lower Mustang.
The drive begins with a series of winding roads that navigate through deep valleys and along the banks of the Kali Gandaki River. As we descend, the stark, barren landscapes of Upper Mustang give way to greener hills and terraced fields. The road passes through several traditional villages where daily life continues against the backdrop of the Himalayas.
Throughout the drive, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, with the landscape transforming from high-altitude desert to subtropical greenery. The drive can belong and bumpy, but the changing scenery provides constant visual interest.
Upon reaching Tatopani, we check into a lodge and can unwind by soaking in the natural hot springs. The hot springs are a perfect way to relax and soothe tired muscles after the trek, offering a rejuvenating end to the day. Enjoy the serene atmosphere and the contrast of the warm waters with the cool mountain air as you reflect on the adventures of the past days.(Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)
We begin the day with a drive from Tatopani to Pokhara, enjoying the scenic journey through the diverse landscapes of Nepal. As we travel, the road meanders alongside rivers and through picturesque valleys, offering a final glimpse of the natural beauty of the region.

Nepal Poon hill trek and city tour
For anyone considering doing a Nepal tour, we highly recommend Binoy Rai, the owner of Mystic Himalaya Trekking and Expedition. We were really impressed by the efficiency, courtesy and the caring attitude demonstrated by Binoy in handling all our questions in such an easy manner. We highly recommend them for any future travelling prospects.EBC 2018 – Amazing
I completed the Everest Base Camp trek with my wife and two great friends in October 2018. The trip was amazing with some of the best scenery on the planet. The Nepalese people are wonderful and so welcoming to visitors. Our trip and itinerary was perfectly put together by Binoy and the team at Mystic Himalaya and the trek superbly guided by Chogyal. This was my second EBC trek organized by Binoy and we’re already planning our return in 2020 to explore the Annapurna region. I highly recommend Mystic Himalaya Trekking and look forward to my next trek with them.Amazeballs
After my husband's 12 years of incessant nagging, I finally agreed to trek to Everest Base Camp. Having kept in contact with Binoy from his last trek 16 years ago, we had the privilege of trekking with Mystic Himalaya. The professionalism and care shown by the Mystic team was outstanding. From the moment we were picked up from the airport, to the moment we were dropped back, we were completely taken care of. Everything was so well organised, and our trekking crew, Chogyal, Pemba, Buddhi and Sujan were fantastic, every step of the way. We will definitely be back.Wonderful trip to Nepal
We recently went on a trek and tour with Mystic Himalaya Trekking. It was one of the most adventurous and fun trips we have ever been on. One of the owners and our trekking guide named Binoy was the absolute best. I can’t even begin to say how informative he was about the area and how he attended to our every need. He has his own personal crew that hauled our bags and they cooked all our meals. They were so delicious. I would recommend anyone considering going on a trek to Nepal to check them out. I can’t imagine anyone else could be better than they were. Thanks for a memorable and amazing trip.Absolutely the best Nepal Guides
My son and I had the privilege of trekking with Pranoy and Pemba in the Mustang district, and it was an amazing experience. What sets the Mystic Himalaya experience above other treks is the depth of cultural knowledge and history that the guides have to offer. In addition to breathtaking scenery, we got a fascinating look at the history, architecture, and culture of that region, presented by a guide who is articulate and very well-educated in his field. And let's talk about logistics. We managed to hit the tail end of the monsoon season and got a LOT of rain. With limited time (only one week), our Plan A was to fly to Jomsom and start trekking there. Since planes weren't flying (and didn't for 3 more days), Pranoy got us a driver. We drove for a day and were halted by a massive landslide. Pranoy came up with a new itinerary, and we got some spectacular hiking on our way to Jomsom. With each new "obstacle," Pranoy came up with a new plan and we had a superb trek. We were joking that we went through Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, etc. and were on Plan E by the end. Every bit of it was gorgeous and a lot of fun! With all of those changes, we felt safe and extremely well cared-for. Food was excellent -- supervised and sometimes prepared by Pemba. Accommodations were very comfortable and exceeded expectations. Best of all, Pranoy stayed in constant communication with locals and other guides to ensure our safety every step of the way. With this team, you are working with real professionals that have guided for National Geographic. I wouldn't trek with anyone else -- they are the best!Add a Review
