Overview

Embarking on the Gokyo Valley trek begins with an exhilarating flight to Lukla, navigating along the course of Dudh Khosi until reaching its upper catchment. Here, pristine and breathtaking lakes, surrounded by the world’s tallest mountains, captivate travelers with their beauty. The trek unfolds through charming Sherpa villages, including the popular Namche Bazaar, where we spend several nights.

Compared to the Everest Base Camp trek, this journey attracts fewer tourists, offering an ideal destination for those seeking the blend of remoteness and beauty. The region is steeped in mythological stories, with legends recounting the life of the mystic Lama Sanga Dorjee, who lived here and exhibited supernatural powers. Gokyo Valley is entwined with Yeti tales, and it is said that Lama Sanga Dorjee installed the Yeti skull at Pangboche Monastery.

Gokyo Valley is a haven for rare wildlife, including the elusive musk deer, Himalayan Thar, snow leopard and various bird species, such as the beautiful Imphean Pheasant, Nepal’s national bird.

The trek offers an ascent to Gokyo Ri, providing a breathtaking panorama of five of the world’s tallest mountains – Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga. Continuing from Gokyo, the trail follows the Third Lake’s bank and proceeds to the renowned Rinjo Pass, offering unparalleled views of the Himalayas, including Everest and the world’s four tallest peaks.

Descending from the pass, the trail leads to another valley, presenting a different perspective of the mountains and passing several pristine lakes. Crossing to the other side introduces a landscape reminiscent of Patagonia, followed by a descent to a Tibetan Plateau-like setting. Overall, the Gokyo Valley trek promises an immersive experience in nature’s paradise.

Typical Day with Mystic Himalaya Trekking

Our trekking day commences with a morning delivery of tea, coffee, or hot chocolate to your room by your assistant guide. This is followed by a warm washing water bowl brought to your room. Then you will have a time to organize, packing essential items for the day into your day pack, including sunglasses, sunscreen, sun hat, mobile phone, camera, cash, passport, rain jacket, rain pant, day pack cover, fleece jacket, water bottle, and optional snacks. Once organized, leave your duffel bag outside your room for collection by our staff. We will give you an hour to prepare your duffel bag, and breakfast will be served in the main dining hall.

Our breakfast begins with hot porridge with milk and honey, accompanied by tea or coffee. This is followed by your choice of eggs with bread, butter, and jam. While you enjoy your breakfast, our porters head to the next campsite, aiming to reach it before the group. After breakfast, we recommend some stretching before hitting the trail. Ensure you haven't left anything in the lodge by thoroughly checking your room before departure, although our staff also conducts a final check. Our lead assistant guide will call "Zum Zum" in Nepali, meaning 'Let’s Go,' and we embark on a scenic stroll under the care of our reliable staff.

After approximately 4 hours of walking, we pause for lunch amidst nature's beauty, offering breathtaking mountain views. Due to the high elevation in the Khumbu Region, most days involve lunch and camping due to rapid elevation gain. If the day is longer, we trek for 2 to 3 hours after lunch before checking into our lodge to rest. At 4 pm, tea is served with biscuits. A bowl of warm washing water is also provided in the afternoon, either before or after tea. Spend time with the group or our staff, listening to their stories. Dinner is served at 6:30 pm, beginning with a hot bowl of soup with snacks, followed by the main course and dessert. Hot drinks are offered five times a day to ensure you stay adequately hydrated. After dinner, our staff provides hot water bags to keep you warm during the night and refills your water bottle. This concludes our day.

The trail descends steeply, and we cross a suspension bridge over the Dudh Koshi, arriving at Jorsale village. Crossing another suspension bridge after Jorsale brings us to the confluence of two major rivers, Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi. Here, a high suspension bridge awaits, and a steep climb with switchbacks takes us to the first viewpoint of Mount Everest. Weather permitting, a glimpse of Mt. Everest awaits us.

From this point, Namche Bazaar is only 1.5 hours away, leading us through a beautiful pine and rhododendron forest. Although now limited to local merchants, Namche retains its prosperity. Just across the valley to the southeast, the impressive peaks of Thamserku and Kangtega stand tall.

Upon reaching Namche Bazaar, we'll have lunch, and in the afternoon, we'll explore the Sherpa museum. Similar to the previous days, our trek commences with an uphill climb, providing occasional opportunities to look back and enjoy a bird’s eye view of the beautiful Machermo valley against the stunning backdrop. Our walking pace becomes rhythmic, attuning to the ascending altitude in the serene natural surroundings. The beauty of nature unfolds as we ascend, offering ever-improving views. Upon reaching the ridge top, the trail undulates with a mostly gradual uphill climb until reaching a rocky ledge. Following this ledge and crossing the river on a metal bridge, we witness the formidable force of Dudh Khosi cascading down the valley, destined to merge into the Ganges. After crossing the bridge, the trail flattens, occasionally with a gradual uphill section, leading us to the first lake.

The Second Lake is approximately half an hour's stretch from the First Lake, and the Third Lake is about the same distance from the Second Lake. Finally, we arrive at Gokyo Third Lake, situated in a breathtaking setting with a turquoise blue lake surrounded by magnificent mountains. These lakes hold significant religious importance for both Hindus and Buddhists, considering them holy. During the Janai Purnima festival in August, people from the lower valleys trek to Gokyo to take a ritual bath in this sacred lake. The lakes are also home to Brahmini Ducks, and the locals are careful not to pollute the pristine water. Our lodge tonight offers the best view of the lake and the mesmerizing mountain panorama.
Opting for the afternoon excursion hike to the Fourth Lake rewards you with a magnificent panorama, featuring Cho Oyu and an expansive perspective of Everest's North Col. Overnight at Gokyo Resort. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)
Your Accommodation Tonight
*Experience tranquility in a well-insulated room with an attached bathroom, offering a serene view of the lake and a captivating backdrop of majestic mountains.*

In the crisp morning air, after savoring tea or coffee, our exhilarating hike to Gokyo Ri commences. We cross the stream flowing to the Third Lake over small rock boulders, which might be icy in the morning, making them slippery. Your walking stick can be a helpful companion in such conditions. After crossing the stream, our trail ascends steeply on this barren dome-shaped hill, marked by a switchback trail. Guided by flashlights as we plan to walk in the dark, we follow the lead assistant guide's pace. With breaks to catch our breath, we steadily progress. Halfway to the top, when the sun illuminates the surroundings, offering a photo opportunity, a sense of happiness and immense bliss pervades. The chirping of Tibetan Snow Cocks motivates us to push further. Our bodies are energized by the rising sun, providing a photo opportunity at every step. Once we reach the top of Gokyo Ri, a breathtaking view unfolds with four of the world's tallest mountains – Everest, Cho Oyo, Lhotse, and Makalu. Surrounded by these magnificent peaks, you'll feel like being in paradise. The beautiful turquoise lake enhances the entire panoramic view, as if it's perfectly placed. After capturing these moments, we descend to our lodge. Overnight at Gokyo Resort. (Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner included)

The trail leads to the other side of the lake, offering scenic views of Gokyo at every step. Meandering along the moraines, we make our way towards the pass, where your walking stick becomes a valuable companion once again. Upon reaching the pass, colorful Buddhist flags flutter in the wind, assuring a safe journey to the next destination. If you carry a Buddhist prayer flag and wish to tie it up at this special place, you are most welcome. The panoramic view of Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu, along with Gokyo village and a foreground lake adorned with these beautiful prayer flags, creates a picturesque scene for capturing memorable moments. After spending some time at the pass, reveling in this spectacular beauty, our trail descends to the valley bottom on the other side. Before proceeding, our staff checks the snow condition. If it's too icy, we offer the use of snow spikes. The trail is marked with handrails, and we soon reach a pristine first lake where we stop for lunch. Following a picnic lunch, our trail descends gradually, revealing a spectacular view of the rocky peaks on our left, adorned with serene lakes. The descent steepens as we enter a Tibetan plateau-like valley, marking Lungden. Originally a yak pastureland, Lungden now hosts small lodges catering to the needs of passing tourists. Passing through several small villages, the trail provides a picturesque setting with majestic mountains as the backdrop. EBC 2018 – Amazing

I completed the Everest Base Camp trek with my wife and two great friends in October 2018. The trip was amazing with some of the best scenery on the planet. The Nepalese people are wonderful and so welcoming to visitors. Our trip and itinerary was perfectly put together by Binoy and the team at Mystic Himalaya and the trek superbly guided by Chogyal. This was my second EBC trek organized by Binoy and we’re already planning our return in 2020 to explore the Annapurna region. I highly recommend Mystic Himalaya Trekking and look forward to my next trek with them.

After my husband's 12 years of incessant nagging, I finally agreed to trek to Everest Base Camp. Having kept in contact with Binoy from his last trek 16 years ago, we had the privilege of trekking with Mystic Himalaya. The professionalism and care shown by the Mystic team was outstanding. From the moment we were picked up from the airport, to the moment we were dropped back, we were completely taken care of. Everything was so well organised, and our trekking crew, Chogyal, Pemba, Buddhi and Sujan were fantastic, every step of the way. We will definitely be back.
TryhardTravelBug,

Wonderful trip to Nepal

We recently went on a trek and tour with Mystic Himalaya Trekking. It was one of the most adventurous and fun trips we have ever been on. One of the owners and our trekking guide named Binoy was the absolute best. I can’t even begin to say how informative he was about the area and how he attended to our every need. He has his own personal crew that hauled our bags and they cooked all our meals. They were so delicious. I would recommend anyone considering going on a trek to Nepal to check them out. I can’t imagine anyone else could be better than they were. Thanks for a memorable and amazing trip.
Brad and Vicki Godfrey,

Absolutely the best Nepal Guides

My son and I had the privilege of trekking with Pranoy and Pemba in the Mustang district, and it was an amazing experience. What sets the Mystic Himalaya experience above other treks is the depth of cultural knowledge and history that the guides have to offer. In addition to breathtaking scenery, we got a fascinating look at the history, architecture, and culture of that region, presented by a guide who is articulate and very well-educated in his field. And let's talk about logistics. We managed to hit the tail end of the monsoon season and got a LOT of rain. With limited time (only one week), our Plan A was to fly to Jomsom and start trekking there. Since planes weren't flying (and didn't for 3 more days), Pranoy got us a driver. We drove for a day and were halted by a massive landslide. Pranoy came up with a new itinerary, and we got some spectacular hiking on our way to Jomsom. With each new "obstacle," Pranoy came up with a new plan and we had a superb trek. We were joking that we went through Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, etc. and were on Plan E by the end. Every bit of it was gorgeous and a lot of fun! With all of those changes, we felt safe and extremely well cared-for. Food was excellent -- supervised and sometimes prepared by Pemba. Accommodations were very comfortable and exceeded expectations. Best of all, Pranoy stayed in constant communication with locals and other guides to ensure our safety every step of the way. With this team, you are working with real professionals that have guided for National Geographic. I wouldn't trek with anyone else -- they are the best!
